Fatal crash shuts down M-53 in both directions

Road closed just north of 23 Mile Road

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – M-53 was shut down in both directions just north of 23 Mile Road after a two-car crash, Friday.

Shelby Township police responded to the crash which occurred at approximately 4:23 p.m. on M53 between 23 and 24 Mile Roads.

Police say a Ford Explorer driven by a 44-year-old man from Capac was driving southbound on M53 when he crossed the center median and struck a white Chevy Malibu driven by a 37-year-old man from Memphis.

Shelby Township police say the 37-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford Explorer was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. 

Authorities say it is unknown at the time if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash and witnesses are asked to contact Shelby police at 586-731-2121.
