Northbound I-275 reopens at Michigan Avenue following deadly wrong-way driver crash

State police say innocent driver, passenger killed in crash

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Northbound I-275 has reopened at Michigan Avenue after a deadly crash Tuesday morning caused by a vehicle traveling the wrong way on the interstate. 

The crash happened near Palmer Road in Canton Township. Michigan State Police said the driver and a passenger of the vehicle which was traveling in the right direction were killed.

A vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes struck a vehicle traveling northbound, killing the driver of that vehicle.

The driver of the other vehicle is a 59-year-old man from Wolverine Lake, Mich. He was transported to a hospital. His condition is not known. 

State police said open alcohol was found in the man's vehicle. 

The northbound lanes of the interstate was shut down for hours. 

State police are investigating what may have caused the driver to travel in the wrong direction on the interstate.
