How Detroit schools are preparing for emergencies with creative solutions

The Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) is implementing a safety initiative involving discarded fire hoses to secure doors during potential active shooter situations. This approach, learned from ALICE training, involves cutting fire hoses into 12-inch pieces to block door handles, making it difficult for intruders to gain entry. Chief of Public Safety Labrit Jackson emphasizes that this method is a supplementary safety measure that can delay assailants, allowing more time for first responders. Additionally, DPSCD is training teachers to prioritize evacuation when safe, while encouraging other districts to adopt the fire hose technique for enhanced security.
