Opening Day weather now a close call in Detroit

Plus, more weather trouble for Sunday's game

No description found

DETROIT – Light rain and snow showers this afternoon will diminish this evening, and clouds should even start breaking up by late tonight.

Lows dropping into the upper 20s (that’s -2° Celsius for our Canadian neighbors). Northwest wind at 10-15 mph.

Friday marks the Detroit religious holiday known as Opening Day, and the day will start dry with some sunshine.  Clouds will increase by afternoon, as today’s computer models have now accelerated the timing of the compact, but very dynamic, weather system moving our way that I talked about yesterday.  Right now, it appears that most of the game should be dry.  However, all bets are off after 4 p.m., as a band of either rain or snow (and I’m not talking flurries) approaches Comerica Park.  Here’s the timing based upon how my RPM model is handling things right now:

Game temperatures should reach the low 40s (5° Celsius), but it’ll obviously feel cooler if you’re feeling the southwest breeze at 8-13 mph.  If you’ll be at the game, dress warm, and I strongly suggest checking the radar on our free Local4Casters app to track the progress of the approaching precipitation.  Head over to the app store and search under WDIV.  I’ll also tweet updates if I’m able (as the Tigers’ meteorologist, I may be a little busy) -- follow both me (@PGLocal4) and @Local4Casters.

Friday’s sunrise is at 7:03 AM, and Friday’s sunset is at 8:08 PM.

Periods of snow will impact our Friday night, with some of us potentially picking up a solid couple of inches since the snow will be falling at night in below freezing temperatures (remember that, even with cloud cover, the relatively stronger April solar radiation actually gets through the clouds and frequently melts April snowfalls…but all bets are off at night if it’s cold enough).  Lows by Saturday morning in the mid 20s (-4° Celsius).

We make see some scattered lake effect snow showers streaming southward from Lake Huron Saturday morning, but I think they will diminish by early afternoon, with skies then becoming partly cloudy.  Highs only in the mid 30s (2° Celsius).  By the way, our April 9th record for the lowest high temp is 31° (-.5° Celsius), set way back in 1892.

Mostly clear Saturday night, with near record lows around 20° (-7° Celsius).

We’ll probably start with some sunshine Sunday morning, but clouds will quickly increase, and rain should develop during the afternoon (possibly beginning as some wet snowflakes across our northern suburbs).  Highs in the low 40s (6° Celsius). By the way, Sunday is one of Detroit’s most interesting weather records: Our greatest single-day temperature rise! On April 10, 1977, we had a 51 degree rise from the morning low of 35° (1.5° Celsius) to the afternoon high of 86° (30° Celsius)!  What a day THAT was!

Rain is likely Sunday night, which means trouble for the Sunday night nationally televised Tiger game against the Yankees that some brilliant network executive thought would be a good idea. Night baseball in Detroit in April?  Uh, no. Temperatures Sunday night will remain steady, or even rise toward Monday morning.

Rain showers will start our day on Monday, then move out as skies begin to clear. Highs in the mid 50s (12° Celsius).

Tuesday then starts a dry spell that should last right through the end of the week. Temperatures will steadily moderate, too, as I’ve been telling you all week long:  mid 40s on Tuesday (7° Celsius), upper 40s on Wednesday (9° Celsius), mid 50s on Thursday (12° Celsius), and near 60° (15° Celsius) Friday into the weekend!
