Labor Day forecast: Severe weather risk increases for SE Michigan

DETROIT – A calm start to your Labor Day around Metro Detroit with temps in the upper 50s to low 60s as you head out.

You can expect plenty of sunshine for the first half of your Monday, and then clouds will start to increase as temps warm into the low and mid 80s. It’s a great pool and beach day, but be careful out there on the boats. The wind is picking up late morning into the afternoon SW 10-25 mph gusting 20-35 mph not related to any storms that will be on the way.

Afternoon, evening showers and storms

We need to keep an eye to the skies by about 3 or 4 p.m. It looks like our greatest chance for showers and storms will be between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. today all across SE Lower Michigan and Southern Ontario. A cold front will be moving through and this will spark storms capable of dangerous wind, hail, and even a small tornado or two possible -- especially near the Ohio Border.

These storms will be present during or just after dinner, so consider moving the Holiday BBQ up into the late afternoon or earlier evening. The biggest concern are storms producing wind gusts or bursts of 60-70 mph this evening. Still, a few spotty storms may pop before the front arrives, so pay attention starting mid afternoon.

Tuesday forecast

Cooler air is coming in Tuesday with lows in the 50s and highs only in the low 70s. We should see a few spotty showers around too tomorrow afternoon as the kids head back to school. These will be spotty, lighter showers as we transition into cooler air and the winds will be lighter W 5-15 mph.

More shower chances on Wednesday and Thursday with lows dropping into the upper 40s, and highs only in the mid 60s midweek. These showers will not amount to much but will be nuisance showers both days. Skies will begin to clear up Friday into the weekend with a little warming response from the upper 60s to low 70s.  You can track sky conditions, and storm chances with our Local4Casters app.
