NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – North Miami Beach police rescued a woman and her 4-month-old baby from their flooding home Sunday as Hurricane Irma swept over South Florida.
A man who lives next door to the family called 911 about 4 p.m. after water began pouring into his home.
Police said the man knew that his neighbors were home alone during the storm and he was worried for their safety.
He notified authorities because he was unable to get out of his house during the storm.
Police used a special armored vehicle to drive through the neighborhood and rescue the mother and baby.
The family was taken to a shelter to wait out the rest of the storm.
Authorities said they believe that the family would have drowned if they had stayed trapped inside their house during the remainder of the storm.
Coral Springs police and firefighters also helped a family Saturday, working together to deliver a baby girl at home during the hurricane.
