Metro Detroit weather forecast: A LOT of rain is headed our way

No description found

If you’ve been following the articles this week, you know that the theme has been that it has been extremely difficult to get our leaves done due to the cold, windy and wet weather.

Staying with that theme, there's both good news and bad news.  The good news is that, following today’s dry and breezy weather, Friday’s dry weather will give you a chance to get out there and take care of some of the leaves…unless that thing called work gets in the way.  Yes, the leaves may still be damp, but this may be your best chance for a while.  And with many cities (not all, but many…including my city of Farmington Hills) ending yard waste pick-up by the end of the month, time is simply running out to finish the job.  After Friday, things go decidedly downhill again…

We should see some clearing during the first half of tonight, with skies becoming partly cloudy later at night.  Lows in the upper 20s (-2 degrees Celsius).  Wind will steadily diminish overnight, and eventually become very light or even dead calm.  Given our damp ground, if skies clear for more than a few hours, we also may have some light fog develop.

Friday will be dry during the daylight hours, with at least partial sunshine in the morning.  Clouds should tend to thicken during the afternoon, however, and we’ll end the day cloudy.  Highs in the mid 40s (6-7 degrees Celsius).  South-southeast wind at 8 to 12 mph.

Friday’s sunrise is at 7:27 a.m., and Friday’s sunset is at 5:10 p.m.

Rain develops between 11:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. Friday night, so our Friday evening plans should be fine…just keep an eye on the radar on our free Local4Casters app in case you’ll be out and the weather pattern speeds up slightly.  The rain will become heavy at times, and there’s even the chance for a rumble of November thunder, so don’t be surprised if you are awakened.  Temperatures will rise to just shy of 50 degrees (9-10 degrees Celsius) by dawn Saturday.

Rain is a good bet Saturday, although I don’t think it’ll be the steady heavier rain that we’ll see Friday night.  Temperatures will rise into the low to mid 50s (11-12 degrees Celsius), so this is our one mild day of the next ten.  If you don’t like standing out in the cold, this could be your day to gas up the car…as long as your gas station has that big awning so you don’t have to stand in the rain.  Total rainfall Friday night through Saturday looks to be around an inch, and this appears to be a rather widespread amount for southeast Michigan.  Here are some maps to show you our RPM model’s projection of the rain’s timing, as well as the expected rain amounts:

Once the strong cold front passes by late Saturday afternoon, three things will happen:  temperatures crash, winds increase, and moisture strips out.  Rain showers ending could mix with some wet snow, but I don’t expect any accumulation as the moisture will be rapidly dwindling.  As Andrew Humphrey called it this afternoon when we talked about it, it’ll just be “conversational snow.”  Needless to say, if you’ll be taking your sweetie out Saturday evening, be ready for some big weather changes!  Temperatures Saturday night should eventually drop to near freezing by dawn Sunday, so watch out for possible icy patches if your area ends up below freezing.

Windy and cold on Sunday, with some flurries or very light snow showers possible.  Temperatures holding steady in the mid 30s (3 degrees Celsius).

Clouds should decrease Sunday night, with lows in the mid 20s (-3 to -2 degrees Celsius).

Thanksgiving Week

As I mentioned in my article a couple of days ago, travel weather across the nation next week looks overall very favorable, as I don’t see any significant storms on the horizon after this weekend’s big one.  Here’s my expectation for our weather here in southeast Michigan:

Monday:  Partly cloudy and breezy, with highs in the low to mid 40s (6 degrees Celsius).

Tuesday:  Partly cloudy and breezy, with highs in the mid 40s (7 degrees Celsius).

Wednesday:  Mostly sunny and breezy, with highs in the upper 30s (4 degrees Celsius).

Thanksgiving Day:  Partly cloudy, with highs in the low 40s (5-6 degrees Celsius).  Right now, it looks chilly but dry for America’s Thanksgiving Parade!  Of course, if it’s too cold for you, just get a fire going in the fireplace, grab a hot chocolate, and join us here on Local 4 for Detroit’s exclusive live parade coverage from start to finish.  And after the parade, there should be no weather issues for those of you heading downtown for the huuuuuge Lions game at Ford Field!  Come on Lions…let’s stomp on those Vikings like cockroaches.

Friday:  Mostly sunny, with highs in the mid 40s (7 degrees Celsius).
