DETROIT – Welcome to the first Saturday of 2021, Motown!
The new year’s first Saturday and weekend will look and feel like winter. Today will be chilly and slick. More snow arrives tonight and Sunday. Much of next week will be chilly by day and cold by night.
Saturday morning will have scattered snow and freezing rain. Temperatures will be near or just below freezing (32 degrees). Drivers and pedestrians must continue using extreme caution while driving and walking.
Sunrise is at 8:02 a.m.
Saturday afternoon will be chilly and mostly cloudy. Any melting will be gradual with highs in the middle 30s. Overall, we’ll have good weather for cleaning up the most recent snowfall or storing decorations.
Sunset is at 5:13 p.m.
Saturday evening will be cloudy and colder. Temperatures return to the freezing mark, and people must watch out for re-freezing on roads and sidewalks.
A separate area of low pressure arrives from the south. As it expands, light snow spreads across the region, from Lenawee and Monroe counties northward over Detroit and through The Thumb by dawn. Conditions will be slick, again, outside the Detroit Pistons 3 p.m. basketball game against the Boston Celtics at Little Caesar’s Arena or the 7:30 p.m. Michigan men’s basketball game against Northwestern in Ann Arbor.
Sunday will be cloudy with light snow, especially in the morning and midday. One to two inches of new snow is possible. Highs will be in the middle 30s.
Some sunshine returns, Monday and Tuesday, with seasonable conditions. Daytime temperatures will be in the middle 30s, and both days will be good for sledding if there’s enough snow on the hills. If not, maybe ice skating is the way to go whether it’s at Campus Martius or anywhere else. Just remember your mask as well as your winter coat, hat and gloves. Snow showers are possible Monday night into early Tuesday morning.
Wednesday and Thursday will be cloudier and chilly. Afternoon temps will be in the middle 30s.
