Metro Detroit weather: Arctic blast continues Saturday night, some snow on the way

Warming up again next week

DETROIT – We have a mix of sun, clouds and snow this evening. Snowflakes will fade as it gets darker, and it becomes more frigid again.

More snow arrives Sunday morning, and it’s gone by the afternoon with temperatures above freezing. It feels more like spring-time after the weekend.

It remains very cold Saturday evening, but we’ve experienced colder. Today’s record low was 4 deg. in 1896, and the lowest high temp recorded on this date is 16 deg. from the same year.

Temps were and are higher than that today, but we still need our winter coats, hats, scarves and gloves to stay warm. With scattered snow flying and the sun shining through at times, temperatures are in the upper teens and low 20s.

Saturday night will be frigid and mostly cloudy. Remember to keep pets indoors and grab extra blankets before turning all of your clocks ahead one hour. Also, change the batteries in all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

Warming up Sunday -- after snow

Sunday will begin with very low temperatures and a new batch of snow. A trace to two inches of snow are possible.

Amazingly, temperatures will rise nicely after the snow stops falling. Any snow that accumulates will melt pretty quickly with highs in the low 40s to near 45 degrees.

Plus, snow will be ending in time for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Detroit’s Corktown. Dress in layers if you are setting up the event or arriving early. It will not be as cold during the parade.

Even warmer week ahead

Monday will be mostly cloudy to partly sunny and milder. Afternoon temps will be in the low 50s.

Tuesday will be partly sunny and cool. Highs will be in the upper 40s.

Wednesday will be warmer with partly to mostly sunny skies. It will feel like spring before it officially begins next weekend. Wednesday highs will be near 60 degrees.

Thursday will be warmer with more sunshine. Highs will be near 65 degrees.

Showers will return on a mild Friday. The mercury will rise to the upper 50s.
