Metro Detroit weather: Briefly cooler before we warm again

St. Patrick’s Day will be warmest day of the week

DETROIT – Conditions are mostly dry around Metro Detroit on this Tuesday morning, but we are seeing some isolated snow, rain, and freezing rain north of Detroit north of I-69.

A surge of moisture out of the south has been working in here overnight adding to the cloud cover and allowing these low clouds to leak a little wintry mix with spotty ice as only a few spots north are below freezing.

So, this is more of an obstacle or nuisance for anyone traveling along I-69 and north on I-75 this morning. Again, most of us are dry for now and our rain shower chances later this morning are waning here in Southern Ontario and SE Lower Michigan.

Our temperatures are hanging in the mid and upper 30s keeping the threat of ice in the Thumb where we have a few freezing temps.

Some moisture from the south meets up with a weak cool front which has become stationary and parked right on top of us prompting isolated and lighter rain chances or drizzle mainly from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. today and they will not be constant or even very widespread.

Most of our day is mostly cloudy but mostly dry. The change in the computer model data this morning is the absence of moisture for this morning’s rain chances which now appear to be very weak.

High temperatures will be impacted by the clouds and scattered shower chances for the first half of the day.

We see highs for most of us around or just shy of 50F with winds shifting from SE to SW 5-10mph. Again, most of the day will be dry and mostly cloudy with some isolated drizzle mainly in the morning.

Sunset is at 7:40 p.m.

Wednesday is still up in the air as the data is not really leaning one way or another which means some model data shows low clouds lingering through the morning which may come in the way of fog and even a spotty bit of drizzle.

Other model data has the area clear of any rain lifting those low clouds up and creating some filtered sunshine which will give our skies that milky sky look otherwise known as mostly cloudy or partly sunny.

The clouds on Wednesday are very important in determining our high temps because if we stay with the stubborn clouds long enough, highs may not make it out of the lower 50s. But, if we can tap into some sunshine through the late morning and afternoon, our highs may head into the low 60s. Right now, it seems like a good blend in more morning clouds and a little afternoon sun with highs near 60 degrees.

Thursday is St. Patrick’s Day and it looks to be the warmest of the week. All model data is buying into this except one. We will be seeing a nice mix of sun and clouds becoming more clouds than sun in the mid to late afternoon with highs in the low to maybe middle 60s.

The European model shows a weak disturbance or front moving through here in the afternoon with a brief shower and then a cooler Friday and Saturday which is certainly possible. Right now we are keeping St. Patrick’s Day dry and on the warmer side with a shot at some rain showers later into the evening or overnight.

Friday brings a more genuine rain chance especially in the afternoon and evening as temps take a step back into the low 50s. Spotty showers will persist Friday night and Saturday morning and then we start the weekend with temps in the upper 30s to upper 40s.

Sunday is the official start of Spring. Yes, the Vernal Equinox happens at 11:33 a.m. Sunday March 20, 2022. And, mother nature is paying attention as the forecast data suggests plenty of Sunday sunshine and temps in the low to mid 50s.
