DETROIT – Good Thursday morning!
Steady rain moved in around midnight and has been going since, making for a slippery and slower drive if you are heading out this morning.
We may end up with a quarter of an inch of fresh rain, which means some minor ponding is possible on some of our highways and byways.
The rain becomes a little more scattered just before sunrise, with showers and areas of drizzle sticking around for at least the start of our morning commute. Pack your patience before you leave -- and the umbrella, if you are going to be outside before 9 a.m.
Temperatures are in the mid-40s to low 50s. The winds are whipping around pretty good with this rain, moving SW at 10-20 mph, gusting near 30 mph. That pesky breeze will be with us all day.
Have no fear, it’s not an all-day washout today, with a great looking light -- or sun -- at the end of the tunnel.
Today’s sunrise is at 6:43 a.m.
Morning rain showers will start wrapping up between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. today. Some isolated showers will linger around through the morning, and then we’ll have a gradual clearing in the late morning hours and beyond.
We will see a much more noticeable clearing as we head through the early and mid-afternoon, leading us to mostly sunshine after 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. today. That pesky breeze moving WSW at 10-20 mph, gusting to 30-35 mph at times, will try to warm us up with some success.
There’s no promise that we will reach 70 degrees today in Metro Detroit, but our odds are decent to see highs in the upper 60s to near 70 degrees later in the day. Get some of that wonderful and free vitamin D in the form of afternoon and early evening sunshine.
Today’s sunset is at 8:22 p.m.
Rainy Friday evening
Friday will be a strange struggle for our temperatures all across SE Lower Michigan and Southern Ontario.
We will start in the lower 40s under clear skies with expectations of increasing clouds as we head through the late morning and afternoon. There is a warm front approaching. which will be the cause of our clouds and the spark for a few scattered rain and isolated thundershowers after 2 p.m. Friday. As a result, our high temperatures will likely halt in the upper 50s, with a few neighborhoods hitting 60 degrees.
Unfortunately, we will see scattered showers Friday evening, and some lingering rain showers into early Saturday.
Super weekend warm up
Morning rain on Saturday should be long gone or at least leaving our area between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. with a gradual clearing and a nice warming on the way. Afternoon sun and clouds Saturday mean we spend most of the day on the dry side. High temperatures will take off into the mid-70s.
We have an equally nice day set up for this coming Sunday. We’ll get morning sunshine and a few more afternoon clouds as highs take aim at 80 degrees. If we don’t get past the mid-70s, that means clouds arrived a bit earlier than expected, and scattered rain showers are possible in the late afternoon.
We will let you know if anything changes for our weekend, but it looks like rain might not arrive until dinnertime Sunday making for a mostly dry weekend.
Not as warm next week
Rain late Sunday will linger into Monday morning, making for a slower and slippery commute as we get back to it early next week.
And this great warming will not continue next week as cooler air moves in behind the Monday showers. Highs should be in the mid-60s Monday, and then mid-to-upper 50s on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
