DETROIT – Good Tuesday afternoon!
The summer solstice arrived at 5:13 a.m. today, marking the official beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.
Our start to summer will be all about the heat.
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Metro Detroit from noon to 8 p.m. today.
The sunshine is going to be intense today, and that’s not just because the summer solstice brings our highest sun angle of the year. There won’t be much to block that bright sunshine today.
Temps will soar through the morning and all afternoon. The winds will still be warming, moving WSW at 5-15 mph, gusting 20-25 mph at times, guiding our high temps into the low and mid 90s.
The humidity will be on the rise too, but it won’t reach a super uncomfortable level. Our heat index will make temps feel a degree or two warmer than they are.
This is not the kind of heat we want to mess around with when it comes to our health, so stay hydrated and find plenty of shade and air conditioning, especially if you must work outdoors. Take as many breaks as your body needs.
Today’s sunset is at 9:13 p.m.
Some shower chances Wednesday
There is a weak cool front moving through Wednesday morning, which presents an opportunity for a few showers between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. We shouldn’t get our hopes up, though, as the rain and thundershower chances will be scattered and low -- so we will have to keep those sprinklers going on the grass and gardens.
Highs will hit the low 90s again on Wednesday with increasing sunshine and decreasing humidity through the mid and late afternoon. It will be very warm, but feeling about as good as 90 degrees can feel.
We feel the relief from the heat late in the day Wednesday with slightly cooler air coming.
We will stay in the mid and upper 80s with plenty of sunshine both Thursday and Friday. The humidity will be low to moderate, and it will feel really nice around here.
Hot, muggier weekend
The weekend ahead will bring back near-90 degree temps or warmer on Saturday. Enjoy a sun and cloud mixture with 90 degrees Saturday. It will be a bit more muggy, which may activate an isolated pop-up shower in the heating of the afternoon.
Sunday will be cooler only due to rain chances, which are starting to come together.
Highs will be in the mid-80s to near 90 degrees depending on the timing of the rain. We will keep you posted on the showers and storms possible Sunday.
