DETROIT – A cooler, drier air mass has overspread the Great Lakes region, and that’s great news for the many people still without power. At least we’re able to sleep at night with these comfortable temperatures.
Skies will be mostly clear overnight, with lows in the mid-to-upper-50s (12 to 15 degrees Celsius). West winds gusting between 20 and 30 mph should settle down as the night progresses and become light – perhaps even calm – by late tonight.
Wednesday’s sunset is at 8:09 p.m., and Thursday’s sunrise is at 6:59 a.m.
Thursday
Thursday is the start of the Peach Festival in Romeo (which runs through Sunday), and we’ll have a splendid day with abundant sunshine and highs in the low 80s (27 to 28 degrees Celsius) with the humidity remaining in check. The wind will as well, with south-southwest winds at 5 to 10 mph, making for just enough of an afternoon breeze to keep things comfortable.
Mostly clear Thursday night, with lows in the mid-60s (17 to 18 degrees Celsius).
Friday
Friday kicks off Arts, Beats, and Eats in downtown Royal Oak (runs through Monday), and you’ll notice the heat and humidity creeping back into the area as highs reach the mid-to-upper-80s (30 to 31 degrees Celsius). There is a slight chance that an isolated shower or thunderstorm could pop up during the hottest part of the day. Sometimes, a lake breeze can stir things up when the atmosphere is unstable enough, but I feel pretty strongly right now that most of us won’t see one.
Partly cloudy Friday night, with lows in the mid-to-upper-60s (19 degrees Celsius).
Holiday Weekend forecast
The weekend forecast is tied to an approaching cold front, and the models are not in 100% agreement on its timing. At this point, I think the first two-thirds of Saturday will be dry, but the late afternoon through evening daypart could see a few showers or thunderstorms popping up. Best chance is the farther north you are. If you have outdoor plans, including heading out to the Peach Festival or Arts, Beats and Eats, just check the real-time radar on the 4Warn Weather App. You have radar in the palm of your hand, so use it!
The heat and humidity are definitely back on Saturday, with highs near 90 degrees (32 degrees Celsius) but cooler farther north, where there may be more cloud cover and those possible showers or storms. The humidity, of course, will make it feel a few degrees warmer.
A scattered shower or thunderstorm is possible anytime from late Saturday afternoon through Saturday night, but I don’t think everybody will necessarily get rain, so keep those sprinklers going just in case. Lows Saturday night depend upon the front’s progress. South of the front, temps will only drop into the upper-60s (20 degrees Celsius), and north of the front, you may get a bit of relief and fall to the low-to-mid-60s (17 to 18 degrees Celsius).
As mentioned above, the models disagree on whether or not the cold front will be south of us on Sunday. Right now, I think that any lingering showers left in the area should end by dawn Sunday, with skies becoming partly cloudy. As long as this timetable pans out, we could salvage a pretty good day Sunday with highs in the low-80s (28 degrees Celsius) and falling humidity.
Partly cloudy Sunday night, with low in the low-60s (16 degrees Celsius). Now that’s more like it.
Labor Day looks great, with partly cloudy skies and highs again in the low 80s (28 degrees Celsius) but with comfortable humidity.
