Metro Detroit weather: Cool and dry Election Day start

Total lunar eclipse Tuesday morning

DETROIT – We have a rare sight in the skies early this morning in the form of a total lunar eclipse which is peaking for us here in Metro Detroit between 5 a.m. and 6:30 a.m.

We do have to battle through some patchy cloud cover, which has drifted off of a snowmaker in the High Plains, but we should still enjoy some nice views of this lunar eclipse the likes of which won’t be visible again until March of 2025.

Conditions are dry and you’ll need at least a light jacket with temps in the upper 20s to low and middle 30s out your door leaving some spotty frost in the cooler and far out suburbs.

Sunrise is at 7:15 a.m.

Some of those debris clouds will stick around for part of this morning before we get back into more and more sunshine on this Election Day.

You have no weather excuses today to do your civic duty and vote. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Metro Detroit will stay mostly sunny through the afternoon with highs only in the middle 50s with lighter and cool breezes ENE 5-12 mph which will keep some east siders and the Thumb area a degree or three cooler than the rest of our area.

Temps today and yesterday have felt cooler while staying slightly above average and we have warmer air moving in for the rest of this work and school week.

Sunset is at 5:19 p.m.

Wednesday

Wednesday is the return of the great combination of sunshine and warmer air as even morning temps are milder in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees. Skies will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy with highs back in the lower 60s which is a good 10 degrees above average.

Rest of week

Thursday is still dry and even warmer as highs will flirt with 70 degrees although we do expect a few more clouds into the afternoon.

Friday is Veterans Day, and the weather news is improving for now. We have a strong cold front approaching but it looks like Tropical Storm Nicole will blast into the Southern and Eastern United States which will stall out that cold front.

Look for a mix of sun and clouds with increasing clouds in the afternoon and highs in the middle 60s. We won’t be able to hold that cold front off for too long as some spotty rain showers dry up as they approach Friday night into early Saturday.

This weekend

We will have more and more cloud cover to deal with both weekend days as temps take a noticeable dip into the 40s on Saturday.

The computer models are not handling precipitation chances well for us here in Metro Detroit but, we cannot rule out a spotty wintry mix late Saturday and/or early Sunday with partly sunny skies and highs likely locked in the upper 30s to end the weekend.
