4Warn Weather – The Great Lakes Water Authority says its regional system is “near capacity” as potentially severe storms approach Southeast Michigan on Wednesday.
The GLWA is urging Metro Detroiters to “be on high alert” amid incoming storms that are expected to bring heavy rains in rounds on Wednesday, April 5. Meteorologists predict that the region could receive 2-3 inches of rainfall in total, posing flooding threats throughout the area.
On Tuesday, the GLWA said it was “actively” draining its regional system, which was almost already at capacity due to “recent heavy rain events.” Residents and businesses in Metro Detroit, “especially those in low lying areas,” are being asked to be alert and prepared for potential flooding.
People who are “prone to flooding during heavy rainfall” are encouraged to remove valuable items from their basements before the storm takes full effect.
Over the past few years, flooding caused by heavy rains has been a particularly prominent issue in Metro Detroit and in Detroit -- areas that are serviced by the GLWA. The Motor City saw significant flooding during rain storms in 2021, when a GLWA pump station allegedly failed.
The National Weather Service says localized flooding is a threat in Southern Michigan due to Wednesday’s storms. There are a number of other severe threats for the area Wednesday, including possible tornadoes, large hail and damaging wind. Click here to see the full forecast.
