Heavy rain could cause flooding Wednesday in Metro Detroit: What to expect and when

Severe weather possible Wednesday afternoon

4Warn Weather – Wednesday begins cooler, cloudier and calmer after a cold front moved in Tuesday.

We’re expecting widespread rain today. There may be a few spotty showers early in the day, but the bulk of the heavy showers and thunderstorm chances increase this afternoon and evening -- so you don’t need to put out your sprinkler today.

Highs will be in the upper 70s around 80 degrees.

There is a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) for severe weather in Southeast Michigan today between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Rain is expected to start picking up around 4 p.m or 5 p.m.

During this time, we could experience damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, particularly for those south of the Pontiac/M-59 corridor.

Heavy rainfall will be likely this evening and tonight after sunset. Flash flooding could occur due to the heavy downpours.

Tonight’s sunset is at 9:10 p.m.

Heavy rain is expected to continue overnight, with the back-edge of the storms likely not pushing out of our area until the early morning hours of Thursday.

Smaller rain chances to end week

Each day through the rest of the week and weekend will feature small rain chances.

I think showers will be spottier on Thursday. On Friday there could be a few more showers, but mainly late into Friday night.

Showers and storms are likely Saturday, with more sunshine on Sunday.

Nationally, dangerous heat indices are expected to build and expand across the Southern half of the U.S. the remainder of the week into early next week. Also, rain may unfortunately return later this week into the already completely saturated Northeast.
