Flood watch in effect as strong, severe thunderstorms with heavy rain are possible for Southeast Michigan

Thursday highs in lower 80s, Friday highs in upper 80s

Flood watch is in effect for all Southeastern Michigan except Monroe County until 4 a.m. Flash flooding is possible with thunderstorms tonight. (WDIV)

4Warn Weather – It’s been a nice day so far across the region, we’ve seen some sunshine and some clouds, but we’re turning our attention to the potential of strong to severe thunderstorms and thunderstorms with heavy rainfall through the mid to late evening and overnight hours tonight.

Flood watch

Flood watch is in effect for all Southeastern Michigan except Monroe County until 4 a.m. Flash flooding is possible with thunderstorms tonight; remember, turn around, don’t drown, and do not drive through roads with water of unknown depth. It only takes about 6″ of rushing water to move a car in flash flooding.

Showers and thunderstorms will develop as we go through the drive time this evening and increase in coverage through the mid to late evening hours tonight.

We’ve declared a 4Warn Weather Alert Day for Wednesday due to the potential of flash flooding from heavy rainfall.

Despite the chance for severe thunderstorms, the heavy rainfall threat looks to be the primary hazard for this evening and tonight.

We declare 4Warn Weather Alert Days to keep you and your family ahead of potential inconvenient weather, weather that could possibly impact your commute and, in this case, cause significant problems, including flash flooding. Have your severe weather safety plans ready to go today.

Thursday

Most of the data supports a widespread 1 to 2 inches of rain for most of Southeastern Michigan. While scattered storms stick around this evening, the heaviest of the rain and thunderstorms look to move into the region between 7–8 p.m. and 1–2 a.m. Thursday Morning. This would be the best chance for any flash flooding with heavy rainfall.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed Lenawee and Monroe Counties under a slight risk (2 out of 5) for severe thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon and evening, with the rest of the region under a marginal risk (1 out of 5) for severe thunderstorms.

Damaging winds and heavy rainfall are the primary threats tonight, but we can not rule out some storms having hail as well. Be alert for rapidly changing weather conditions, and stay tuned for potential severe weather warnings tonight.

Thunderstorms will continue through the early portions of the overnight but wind down before sunrise on Thursday morning. Overnight lows drop into the upper 60s tonight with a shower and thunderstorms still around for a good portion of the overnight.

Drier weather moves back into the region over the next couple of days, but we are not completely done with the chances of showers and thunderstorms through the end of the week into the upcoming weekend.

Weekend forecast

We will keep a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the forecast from Thursday through Saturday. High temperatures in the lower 80s on Thursday, rebounding into the middle 80s on Friday, and then dropping back into the low 80s for the first half of the weekend on Saturday.

Next week

We will hold onto an isolated thunderstorm into the forecast on Sunday before better chances for more thunderstorms rolling early next week on Monday. High temperatures drop to right around 80° by Monday afternoon.
