Snow showers, gusty winds creates tricky travel conditions in Metro Detroit

Tuesday highs in upper 30s; Wednesday highs in lower 30s

Snow showers will diminish during the evening of Monday, Dec. 18, 2023, but gusty winds will persist until Tuesday morning. Clouds will decrease and leave Southeast Michigan with partly cloudy skies Tuesday. (WDIV)

Metro Detroit is getting a brief blast of wintry weather.

The weather is prompting alerts in parts of the region, including both winter weather and high wind advisory for Sanilac County until 12 a.m. and gale warnings for lakes Huron, St. Clair, and Erie through early Tuesday.

It will continue to be windy with scattered snow showers. The snow will be capable of reducing visibility at times and creating slippery conditions in some areas. The winds will add to challenging driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles like trucks.

Northwest winds will be 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph in Metro Detroit. Wind gusts could exceed 45 mph in the Thumb. Temperatures will fall from the mid-30s to the lower 30s and upper 20s during the evening.

Snow accumulation will be limited in many locations due to the warm ground, but a light coating is possible, mainly on grassy surfaces, decks, and cars. Accumulations greater than an inch are possible north of I-69.

Snow showers will wind down Monday evening.

It will be mostly cloudy, windy, and cool in Metro Detroit. Lows will fall to the lower to mid-20s. Wind chill values will fall into the teens with northwesterly winds at 15 to 20 mph and gusts up to 35 mph.

Tuesday

Tuesday will offer some relief, but grab the coat, gloves, and sunglasses. Expect mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies as a high-pressure system moves into the picture.

It will be breezy in the morning, but winds will gradually let up. Gale warnings will be allowed to expire. Morning wind chills will be in the teens. As the coldest day of the week, highs will be in the lower to mid-30s. Westerly winds will be 5 to 15 mph with gusts up to 20 mph.

Wednesday and Thursday

Temperatures will moderate for Wednesday and Thursday, with mostly cloudy skies. Highs will be around 40 degrees, and lows in the mid-20s to 30 degrees. The winter solstice will occur on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 10:27 p.m.

Friday

It will be mostly cloudy, with a slight chance of scattered rain showers on Friday, mainly south of I-96. Highs will be in the lower 40s. Lows will be in the lower 30s.

Weekend forecast

Temperatures will continue to rise over the weekend. Saturday and Sunday will be mostly cloudy, with highs in the mid-40s.

Christmas forecast

Monday, which is Christmas, will bring mild and cloudy conditions with a chance of rain at night. Highs will be 45 to 50 degrees, which is some 10 to 15 degrees above normal for Dec. 25.
