When to expect rain before, on Christmas in Metro Detroit

No white Christmas this year

4Warn Weather – Our Thursday begins with temperatures slightly above average in the 30s. Clouds pump back into the region.

We’ll have more clouds than sun today. Temperatures will be similar to Wednesday, topping out around 40 degrees.

Tonight’s sunset is at 5:04 p.m.

Expect lingering cloud cover tonight and above freezing temperatures.

Rain arrives Friday

With mild air in place, the next low pressure system brings a chance of light rain on Friday.

Scattered, isolated showers could roll through before sunrise on Friday, particularly for those in our southernmost counties. Most will wake up to dry conditions.

Scattered rain chances are possible during the afternoon, but they won’t be common. It isn’t until the evening when more widespread showers are expected to arrive.

By around 5 p.m. or 6 p.m., the widespread rain will begin to creep closer to Metro Detroit, moving eastward. By 6 p.m. or 7 p.m., those widespread showers will be steady at times, reaching much of the Metro Detroit area.

The showers will continue to push northeast through the night and into Saturday morning.

Mild weekend

Lingering showers Saturday morning will become scattered. Computer models indicate that the rain should be moved out by around 8 a.m.

Both Saturday and Sunday will be cloudy and mild. Highs will be in the upper 40s on Saturday, and the low 50s on Sunday.

Warm Christmas with rain chances

Even milder air moves into the region on Christmas Eve on Sunday, with highs near 50 degrees. Highs will stay in the low 50s on Christmas Day. It will feel more spring-like for the holiday.

There is a chance we’ll see rain on Christmas Day, but it’s likely our region won’t see that moisture until the evening -- possibly even past midnight.

Christmas rain showers are possible earlier in the day for those on the western, northern and southern edges of the Lower Peninsula.

Rain chances will last into Tuesday and through Wednesday next week.

For those traveling out of state ...

Nationally, heavy rain moves into southern California on Thursday, as well as mountain snow. For those traveling for the holiday weekend, take note that heavy snow is possible for the High Plains this weekend, and heavy rain may fall over southern Arizona, the Gulf Coast, and the lower Mississippi Valley.
