Dense fog over Metro Detroit to persist into wet Christmas

Dense fog advisory in effect for all of Southeast Michigan

Fog is complicating travel on Christmas Eve as rain moves toward Metro Detroit for a wet Christmas.

A Dense fog advisory is in effect for all of Southeast Michigan, including Sanilac, Genesee, Lapeer, St. Clair, Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Wayne, Lenawee and Monroe counties until 11 a.m. Monday.

Visibility in these areas could drop to a quarter mile or less. It will be particularly important to slow down as it will be harder to see people, animals and cars.

Christmas

Following morning fog on Christmas Day, it will be mostly cloudy with the chance of an afternoon shower. The chance of rain will increase with rain likely in the evening. Temperatures will be unseasonably mild with highs in the lower 50s. Despite being 15 to 20 degrees above average, it will be shy of the Dec. 25 record high of 64 degrees (from 1982). Southeasterly winds will be 5 to 10 mph.

It will be rainy and breezy on Christmas night. Southeasterly winds will pick up to 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 20 mph. Lows will be in the lower to mid 40s, which is well above the normal low of 23 degrees.

Nationally, it will be rainy for a large part of the Midwest and Southeast on Christmas. Snow and gusty winds will impact part of the Great Plains.

Tuesday

Travel on Tuesday, also Boxing Day and the first day of Kwanzaa, could be impacted by the weather conditions in Southeast Michigan and Southwestern Ontario. Expect cloudy skies with rain showers. Highs will be in the lower 50s. A cold front will sweep across the area at night and usher in slightly cooler air.

Wednesday and Thursday

Scattered showers will be possible on Wednesday. Highs will be in the mid 40s with lows in the mid 30s. By Thursday, highs will be around 40 degrees with a chance of rain and snow showers.

Friday through New Year’s Eve

Friday through New Year’s Eve (Sunday), it will be mostly cloudy with temperatures peaking in the mid 30s to near 40 degrees.
