Metro Detroit has been getting rain lately, but the chance for snow is in our forecast.
Temperatures will cool and be closer to normal during the first week of January as cooler air masses slide over the region.
Saturday night, it will be mostly cloudy with lows near freezing. Overnight temperatures will be in the lower 30 degrees in Metro Detroit. Winds will be out of the northwest at 5 to 10 mph.
Normal temperatures for New Year’s Eve and Day are 34 degrees for the high and 22 degrees for the low.
Sunday
Sunday, which is New Year’s Eve, will see the return of precipitation as a clipper brings rain and snow showers to Metro Detroit. The low-pressure system will deliver the chance of a few snow showers in the morning.
Then, the chance of rain and snow showers will increase in the afternoon. The best chance for precipitation will be in the evening as people are heading to New Year’s Eve gatherings. Little to no snow accumulation is expected. Highs will be in the mid to upper 30s. Lows will be in the upper 20s to 30 degrees. Southerly winds will be 5 to 10 mph.
Monday
New Year’s Day will see mostly cloudy skies. Highs will be in the mid 30s. Travelers are not expected to encounter any significant weather-related impacts in Southeast Michigan.
Tuesday and Wednesday
The region will have partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies on Tuesday with the influence of a high-pressure system, but clouds and the chance of a few snow showers will be back for Wednesday.
The first several days of January will have near-average temperatures, but data analyzed by the Climate Prediction Center suggests January will be warmer than normal.
