Tracking weekend snow, bigger winter storm next week in Metro Detroit: What to know

4Warn Weather – Our Thursday begins cold with temperatures starting in the 20s and feeling like the teens or even 10 degrees due to the wind chill. Be sure to grab a thicker coat!

Today’s sunrise is at 8:02 a.m.

The rest of the day will be dry and cold. We will get a few breaks in the clouds, which will allow some of us to enjoy a little sunshine -- though not all of us.

However, highs will struggle to reach the freezing mark this afternoon.

Tonight’s sunset is at 5:14 p.m.

Clouds will roll back in tonight, setting up for a gray Friday.

Our temps will bounce back up above average on Friday, though, reaching the mid-30s.

Light snow this weekend

We’ve got a chance of snow with some light accumulation this weekend.

Snow showers are possible Saturday night into Sunday morning, and will only result in a light coating, at most.

Highs will be in the upper 30s both days. Lows will be in the mid-to-upper 20s.

Winter storm next week

We can confidently say that we will have an impactful winter storm arrive next Tuesday/Wednesday.

Pardon me if you have heard me say this before, but the track of the rain/snow line will greatly dictate the potential snowfall totals for our area. A shift of 50 miles between now and then could be the difference of a few inches and whether you even need to dust off your shovel.

It’s still too early to lock into any accumulation projections, as the data varies significantly at this point. Right now, the data gives us two different scenarios for next week: One in which rainfall cuts into the snow, giving us just a dusting. The second scenario gives us more snowfall, leading to upward of four inches of accumulation in Metro Detroit. Areas to our northwest would receive even more snow.

Either way, this will not be the worst winter storm we have ever seen, but plan for inconvenient weather at the very least next week.

Next week: Michigan game

For all my Michigan Football fans, here’s a quick look ahead to the forecast in Houston next Monday for the National Championship game: As of now, there is a good chance of showers and thunderstorms. It’s a good thing the NRG Stadium is covered, and the inclement weather won’t impact the game, just the tailgaters! Otherwise, it’ll be mostly cloudy and breezy with highs in the low 70s.
