4Warn Weather – TGIF! It’s an ice scrape alert type of morning. Even though we are waking up to dry and cloudy conditions, if you park outside, you will need to warm up the car or scrape off some frost this morning. Temperatures start in the 20s, and a few wind chill readings start in the teens.
Today’s sunrise is at 8:02 a.m.
We’ll bounce back to above average temps today by a couple degrees. Highs will be in the mid 30s.
Conditions will be cloudy and cool all day.
Tonight’s sunset is at 5:15 p.m.
Temps will fall back into the 20s tonight under cloudy skies. We’ll have a light and variable wind.
Light snow this weekend
Our weather pattern turns a bit more active this weekend into next week.
We’ll have low pressure systems split to the north and south of Southeast Michigan over the weekend. Flurries are expected over the weekend, but they will be very scattered and isolated on both Saturday and Sunday.
Some light accumulation of snow is possible this weekend, at most. Any accumulation will be greatly limited by daytime temperatures in the mid- and upper 30s.
System to bring snow, rain next week
Monday will be the “calm before the storm.” We’ll have mostly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 30s to start the week.
Then, a weather system will bring a wintry mix, and potentially accumulating snow, to our region on Tuesday.
As new data rolls in, it appears that we will start with snow showers before sunrise on Tuesday. By late morning, we could see a wintry mix as temperatures rise.
Highs will be around 40 degrees, so it is highly likely we will see a changeover to rain throughout much of the afternoon. In fact, it looks like the rain could even be moderate to heavy at times through Tuesday night.
As temperatures start to fall, we will then see another changeover happen back to snow on Wednesday morning. The timing of that changeover will greatly dictate how much snow accumulation we’ll get on the backend of the system. Data still shows measurable snow, but due to the rain, it’s still too wishy washy to lock into any amounts.
However, if the changeover back to snow happens early enough on Wednesday, I think we could safely pick up a couple of inches. It is also worth noting that wind gusts will be around 30 mph at times as this system pushes through, so that will also factor into wind chills. That adds more complexity to an already fickle setup.
Elsewhere ...
Nationally, a storm tracking across the Southwest and the central/southern Plains will track along the Gulf coast Friday, then into the mid-Atlantic region this weekend. We expect heavy rain across the South and Southeast, and snow for portions of mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
Next week: Michigan championship game
For all my Michigan Football fans, here’s a quick look ahead to the forecast in Houston next Monday for the National Championship game: As of now, there is a good chance of showers and thunderstorms with breezy conditions. It’s a good thing the NRG Stadium is covered, and the inclement weather won’t impact the game, just the tailgaters! Otherwise, it’ll be mostly cloudy with highs in the low 70s.
This is the same system that will work its way up toward Michigan on Tuesday/Wednesday next week, bringing the massive messy mix.
