4Warn Weather – Winter weather is set to make an appearance in Metro Detroit after a mild December.

Foul weather, including snow and thunderstorms, is sweeping across the Midwest and South. A low-pressure system will strengthen as it moves toward the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast while tapping into moisture and energy from the Atlantic Ocean.

That system will contribute to the chances of snow showers in Southeast Michigan this weekend, but another system will impact the area more significantly next week.

Friday night

Cold and mostly cloudy conditions can be expected across Southeast Michigan on Friday night. Lows will fall to the mid-20s. Southerly winds will be 3 to 6 mph.

Saturday

It will be mostly cloudy, with a few flurries in the area Saturday. Highs will be in the mid-30s. Winds will be out of the east-southeast at 5 to 10 mph. The low will be around 30 degrees. Nationally, people will encounter travel impacts in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast as the strong low-pressure system delivers significant snowfall to parts of the region.

Sunday

Sunday will be cloudy with snow showers in the area, mainly in the morning and early afternoon. Light accumulations of less than an inch will be possible. Highs will be in the mid-30s. Lows will be in the upper 20s.

Monday

On Monday, it will be mostly cloudy and calm, with highs in the upper 30s. Lows will be in the lower 30s.

Michigan fans headed to Houston for the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday will face rain and thunderstorms. This will be an issue for travelers and tailgaters. This is the system that will track toward the Ohio Valley and impact Metro Detroit.

Tuesday

The system will arrive in Southeast Michigan with rain, snow, and gusty winds on Tuesday. The chance of rain and snow showers will begin early in the morning. With highs around 40 degrees, it is likely that it will be rainy in the afternoon and evening. As temperatures cool at night, it will be mostly rain with a chance of mixed precipitation. Lows will be in the lower 30s.

Wednesday

Rain, snow, and gusty winds are likely for Wednesday. The track of the low-pressure system and temperatures will be factors in how much precipitation communities in Southeast Michigan pick up and what kind. Small changes could mean the difference between more rain or more snow. Based on current data, it appears that we could see some snow accumulation. Winds will intensify out of the north early and shift northwesterly with gusts over 35 mph. Highs will be in the mid to upper 30s.

As the system evolves and moves closer, forecasts will become more detailed about the potential impacts.
