4Warn Alert Days have been declared for Tuesday and Wednesday due to expected disruptive weather.
A winter storm will impact the Great Lakes region with multiple weather concerns in Metro Detroit. 4Warn Alert Days have been declared for Tuesday and Wednesday due to the expected disruptive weather.
Ahead of the approaching system, Metro Detroit has mostly cloudy conditions. A few flurries will be possible Sunday night. Lows will be in the upper 20s to 30 degrees, and winds will be out of the west-southwest at 5 to 10 mph.
Monday
Monday may be one of the calmer days of the week as active weather moves into the area. It will be mostly cloudy with highs in the upper 30s. Winds will be out of the west-southwest at 5 to 10 mph.
About 1,300 miles away, Michigan fans in Houston for the College Football Playoff National Championship will encounter rain and thunderstorms on Monday.
In Southeast Michigan, during the overnight hours into Tuesday morning, we will see the approach of rain and snow showers from the same system. Early morning lows will be in the lower 30s.
Tuesday
Tuesday, a 4Warn Weather Alert Day, will feel the brunt of the winter-weather system with rain, snow and gusty winds. The rain and snow showers will begin early in the morning. A slushy snow accumulation of about 1-3 inches will impact the morning commute in Metro Detroit.
We will see a transition to all rain by afternoon with highs in the lower 40s. Lows will be in the lower to mid 30s. Wind gusts will top 30 mph and could reach 40 mph.
It appears that the effects of the storm system may remain below the “winter storm” criteria in Metro Detroit due to lower snow accumulation and more rain, but others parts of the state could receive heavy snowfall.
The combination of snow, rain and gusty winds will still cause travel headaches in Metro Detroit. Isolated power outages may also be possible.
Wednesday
Wednesday, a 4Warn Weather Alert Day, will see more rain and snow showers, especially in the morning. Gusty winds are likely. Winds will be northwesterly with gusts over 30 mph. Highs will be in the upper 30s.
Thursday through Next Weekend
A chance of rain and snow showers will continue Thursday and Friday. Next weekend could see a chance of more snow with another low-pressure system. When that system arrives, temperatures will be cold enough to support mostly or all snow.
