4Warn Weather – Disruptive weather is moving through Southeast Michigan on Tuesday with rain, snow, and gusty winds. It is part of a strong storm system, which is delivering snow to the Midwest and strong to severe thunderstorms in the Southeast.
Snow and fog in parts of Metro Detroit are contributing to tricky travel with reduced visibility and the potential of a few slippery spots.
While the system had the potential for widespread accumulating snow across the region of a couple of inches, dry air during the morning limited precipitation, and above freezing temperatures also limited snow accumulation on many surfaces.
- A gale warning for Lake Huron from Port Huron to Port Austin in Southeast Michigan will continue until 10 p.m. Tuesday.
Some roads have remained wet all day. Drivers are encouraged to slow down on wet pavement.
As temperatures warm up into the afternoon, precipitation will be rain for much of the afternoon and evening Tuesday. Although inclement weather will remain, our region is dodging the brunt of this storm system.
We are cancelling the 4Warn Weather Alert Days issued for Tuesday, Jan. 9 and Wednesday, Jan. 10.
Rainy Tuesday afternoon
It will be rainy and windy across much of Southeast Michigan as temperatures push into the lower 40s during Tuesday afternoon. Any snow that did accumulate will melt. Winds will be out of east-southeast and move at 15-20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph.
It is likely to remain rainy through the evening, but we could see a rain-snow mix overnight. Lows will be in the lower to mid-30s. Winds will be out of the south-southwest at 15-20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.
Travel to Northern Michigan may be more difficult as precipitation remains snow.
Rain and snow on Wednesday
We will have rain and snow showers on Wednesday. Most rain and snow will wind down by early afternoon.
There could be a few slippery spots on roads, but temperatures will be above freezing in most places. One of the bigger impacts will be the gusty winds. Westerly winds will move at 20-25 mph with gusts as high as 40 mph.
Highs will be in the upper 30s, but wind chill values will be in the 20s.
Wednesday night, it will be cloudy with a chance of isolated snow showers. Lows will be in the upper 20s.
Snow chances continue
A chance of rain and snow showers will continue Thursday and Friday.
A clipper system will sweep across the area on Thursday with the chance of a dusting of snow.
Friday will bring the chance of more snow with another low-pressure system. When that system arrives, temperatures will be cold enough to support mostly or all snow late Friday and Saturday. Gusty winds and low wind chills will also be prevalent.
