More snow, dangerously cold wind chills possible in Metro Detroit

Snow, gusty winds, and bitterly cold air will make conditions outdoors uncomfortable to even dangerous in Metro Detroit.

A winter weather advisory has been extended for parts of Southeast Michigan, including Genesee, Lapeer, St. Clair, Livingston, Oakland and Macomb counties, until 7 a.m. Sunday. Lake-effect snow showers will have the potential to add another 1 to 2 inches of snow in these areas. A few instances of heavier snow bands could result in isolated totals up to 4 inches.

After a winter storm delivered more than half a foot of snow to parts of Metro Detroit from Friday to Saturday morning, gusty winds will continue to cause problems as more snow falls.

Saturday Night

Lake-effect snow showers will continue and could be heavy at times on Saturday night. Falling snow and blowing will cause reduced visibility across Metro Detroit. Additional snow accumulations are possible, especially beneath heavier snow bands. Roads conditions may fluctuate and conditions may deteriorate rapidly. Frigid conditions will be worsened by the gusty winds. Lows will be in the upper-single digits to around 10 degrees, but wind chills values will be subzero. Winds will be out of the west-southwest at 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.

Sunday

Lake-effect snow showers will be in the area on Sunday, but they will become sporadic in the afternoon. Otherwise, it will be mostly cloudy and blustery. Highs will be in the lower to mid teens, but it will feel much colder. Wind chills will be in the -5 to -15 degrees. Communities under the wind chill advisory could see morning wind chills as low as -20 degrees. Winds will be out of the west-southwest at 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Tailgating Lions’ fans and anyone outdoors should dress appropriately and take breaks from the cold.

Sunday Night

Sunday night, it will be mostly cloudy with blowing snow. Actual air temperatures will fall to around zero overnight. Wind chills will be -5 to -15 degrees. Winds will be out of the west-southwest at 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

It will only get colder on the holiday. Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be mostly cloudy with scattered snow showers. It will be cold and breezy. Highs will be around 10 degrees. It will feel like it is around 5 degrees below zero. Winds will be out of the west-southwest at 10 to 15 mph.

There will be a chance of snow showers for most of the week with very cold air. Temperatures are not likely to reach 20 degrees or higher until Thursday. Metro Detroit’s normal high for next week is 32 degrees and the normal low is 19 degrees.

Drivers should make sure that they have winter emergency kits for their vehicles. Supplies could include a first aid kit, snacks, a flashlight, jumper cables, blanket, gloves, shovel, snow brush and scraper, salt and cat litter, and bottles of water.
