Freezing rain causes dangerous commute before changing to rain in Metro Detroit

Rain showers will continue for the next few days

Wintry mix and freezing rain will continue through the first half of Tuesday (WDIV)

4Warn Weather – Freezing rain will make for a dangerous morning commute Tuesday in Metro Detroit before changing to rain.

TUESDAY: Cloudy skies, wintry mix and freezing rain in the morning with snow north, changing to a rain/snow mix and over to rain showers for most this afternoon. Snow and wintry mix holds on in our Northern counties into the afternoon/early evening. High: 35. Winds: Southeast 3-6 MPH

TUESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy skies. Rain showers winding down, wintry mix/snow ending for northern communities. Temperatures staying above freezing. Low: 33. Winds: Southeast 3-6 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Cloudy skies, rain showers returning in the afternoon and evening hours. High: 38. Winds: Southeast 3-6 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy skies, rain showers likely. Low: 36. Winds: Southeast 3-6 MPH.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY: All of Southeastern Michigan until 4:00 PM Tuesday Afternoon, Northern Counties including Sanilac, Genesee, Bay and Huron Counties until 10:00 PM Tuesday Night.

Most of the region is dealing with a wintry mix and freezing rain early on Tuesday morning, which will make the commute to work, or out the door this morning very tricky. While main arteries including interstates may look fine as they have been heavily treated or pre-treated in some cases, the side roads and/or secondary roads will be potentially ice covered due to the freezing rain. Temperatures are starting out right around the freezing mark, and with us being in the deep freeze for over a week, even with temperatures a few degrees above the freezing mark this morning we will still deal with freezing rain through around lunchtime today. Most places seeing .10″ to .20″ of ice accumulation from the freezing rain overnight and through the first half of Tuesday.

Give yourself extra time heading out the door this morning, and remember, also elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses are the first to freeze with the freezing rain and become ice covered.

Once we work into the afternoon, warmer air will continue to stream into the region, and that will change over to a wintry mix of rain and snow, and eventually to rain showers for most of the region by late this afternoon into early this evening. Temperatures starting out around the freezing mark today and only making it into the middle 30s for most of us by this afternoon.

The one exception to this, will be our northern tier of communities, where temperatures will remain a few degrees, colder, and keep the winter weather, including some snow accumulations around through much of the day today. Our northern tier of communities from Lapeer to Port Huron and Sandusky will see up to 2 to 4 inches of snow accumulation through this afternoon, someplace could see a little bit higher amounts than that and areas that receive prolong periods of moderate to heavy snowfall. Temperatures there will stay into the lower 30s this afternoon.

The precipitation winds down as we work through the evening hours tonight, and we bring rain showers back into the forecast once again, as we work into Wednesday afternoon and evening, and Thursday as well. Temperatures at this point will be above the freezing mark, so we are expecting this to be an entirely rain event. High temperatures heading for the upper 30s by Wednesday afternoon, and into the lower 40s by Thursday.

We keep cloud covering to the forecast through the end of the week and into the upcoming weekend thanks to moisture still hanging around the region. High temperatures into the 40s on Friday and Saturday, will drop into the upper 30s by the end of the weekend on Sunday.
