Spotty flakes ahead of snow, rain this week: What to know for Metro Detroit

Tracking wet weather this week

4Warn Weather – Our Tuesday begins rather clear and cool with clouds expected to build throughout the day.

Some lake effect flurries are possible near the Thumb today. I also won’t rule out a stray snowflake or two pushing into Metro Detroit early today.

Otherwise, skies will be partly sunny and highs will be in the upper 30s. Winds will pick up behind a passing front, with gusts reaching 20 mph this afternoon.

Tonight’s sunset is at 6:03 p.m.

Mild Wednesday

Conditions will be dry on Wednesday with sunshine making a comeback.

Highs will still be in the upper 30s, so the weather shouldn’t impact any Valentine’s Day plans!

Snow, rain arrive Thursday

A low pressure system will move across Lower Michigan on Thursday, bringing a mix of rain and possible accumulating snow.

The onset of the wet weather will begin before sunrise on Thursday, with most of it pushing out midday. However, snow will linger a bit longer in the Thumb.

The greatest snowfall amounts will likely be along and north of I-69. As of right now, total snowfall north of I-69 looks to reach 3-5 inches.

It also looks like we will pick up less than an inch of snow south of I-94. We expect about 1-3 inches of snow between I-94 and I-696.

For those south of I-94, there’s a better chance of this being a mainly rain event. A rain/snow mix is more likely across most of Metro Detroit, with more snow along and north of I-69.

It is important to note that we are still 48 hours out, so any shift in where the rain/snow line sets up with greatly dictate precipitation type and accumulation totals.

Northwest winds of 25-35 mph will be possible Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening.

Slight weekend snow chances

There are a few slight chances for light flurries to fly on Friday and Saturday.

It will be seasonal this weekend with highs staying in the 30s.

Elsewhere ...

Nationally, a Nor’easter will bring strong winds and heavy snow from the central Appalachians through southern the New England states. If you have travel plans Tuesday to this region, check your flight status. Coastal flooding is expected along portions of the East Coast where the southern edge of this Nor’easter brings heavy rainfall.
