Here’s which areas will see snow vs. rain in Metro Detroit

Wintry wet weather begins Thursday morning

4Warn Weather – A winter weather advisory is in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday for Genesee, Lapeer, St. Clair, Livingston, Oakland and Macomb counties. A system is moving across Lower Michigan, and will bring snow and rain to the area.

Temperatures will start out below freezing as precipitation begins, but will quickly warm into the low 40s across Metro Detroit, so a changeover to rain is likely. The wet weather moves out by early afternoon, but wind gusts will pick up around 30-40 mph, which could lead to a few power outages.

Here’s a breakdown of Thursday’s wet weather and how it’ll affect different areas.

Timeline

Precipitation begins between 6-8am as snow or a wintry mix. Expect the snow or sleet to be heavy at the onset between 7- 9am. Most precipitation will be out of the region by 2pm.

Where to expect snow, rain

Here’s what type of precipitation is expected in the following areas:

  • North of M-59: A quick burst of snow, then a wintry mix of snow and sleet brings accumulations of 2-4 inches. Areas north of I-69 could see 3-5 inches where snow struggles to make a changeover to rain.
  • I-94 to M-59: A rain/snow mix is likely. Sleet and snow transitions to plain rain by mid-morning. Accumulations range from less than an inch to 3 inches with lesser amounts closer to I-94, and greater amounts north. If there is a struggle to changeover to rain, we could see a bit higher snow totals where snowfall persists longer.
  • South of I-94: A brief early morning wintry mix, but a better chance of mainly rain with little to no accumulation expected.

Winds

Northwest winds of 25-35 mph will be possible Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening with gusts around 40 mph, making for blustery conditions in the wake of the wet, wintry weather.

Thursday’s sunset is at 6:05 p.m.

More light flurries possible

We could see a few light flurries fly Friday and Saturday. Otherwise, conditions will be cloudy and cool with highs in the low to mid-30s.

By Sunday, we’ll bounce back into the 40s and stay there with a warming trend next week.
