Thunderstorms, strong winds in Metro Detroit’s forecast for next week

Some areas under marginal risk for severe storms

4Warn Weather – After a cold day with sunshine to start the weekend, we will keep the dry weather around for the end of the weekend and looking ahead into the start of next week.

Expect a mixture of sunshine and clouds for Sunday, temperatures 10-15 degrees warmer than what we had on Saturday. High temperatures heading for the upper 40s to near 50 degrees by Sunday afternoon.

With high pressure firmly in control of the forecast, expect plenty of sunshine to start the week on Monday with high temperatures heading for the lower 50s by the afternoon.

For Tuesday and Wednesday, we have strong system heading for the region that will bring us our first chance of spring-like thunderstorms by the late evening hours. We will watch a low-pressure system moving into the region, and this will bring the active forecast to the region.

Expect to stay dry for the majority of the day on Tuesday as a warm front lifts north into the region. As it does, the strong southerly flow will send our daytime highs soaring well into the lower 60s by Tuesday afternoon, approaching near-record territory. The record high temperature for Tuesday is 63 degrees, and we will come within a degree of that.

With the low-pressure center moving in, rain will overspread the region late Tuesday night, and we could even see a few stronger thunderstorms as well. The Storm Prediction Center has placed portions of the region in a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather Tuesday. With breezy to windy conditions moving in, we could see a few stronger thunderstorms with strong wind gusts along with the potential for heavy rainfall.

Once the front moves through the region on Wednesday Morning, we will hit our high temperature in the 50s early in the day, and temperatures will fall fast throughout the day, dropping into the 30s by the afternoon evening hours. As the rain winds down, we could see a few snowflakes at the end as the moisture moves out of the region. Winds will also be an issue throughout the day with wind gusts in excess of 40 to 45 MPH possible.

Drier and more tranquil weather moves into the region for the end of the week and the start of next weekend. Colder air also moves in briefly for Thursday with high temperatures into the 30s, but then we rebound fairly quick. Expect plenty of sunshine as well, high temperatures warming up into the lower 50s by Friday and then into the upper 50s to near 60 degrees by Saturday.
