Severe storms may bring strong winds, hail to Metro Detroit: What to know

From 60s to single digits and back this week

4Warn Weather – A mild morning, indeed! Our Tuesday begins with temperatures around 50 degrees, and we will just continue to warm up from here.

There was some early morning development of showers and storms, but they mostly dodged the Metro Detroit area. still, we hold onto a chance for showers and storms near the state line until 10 a.m.

Today’s temperatures will feel more like early May. Record high temperatures this afternoon (upper 60s) set the stage for severe thunderstorm potential tonight -- and that is why we are under a 4Warn Weather Alert.

We will see sunshine and breezy conditions this afternoon paired with the warmth. Clouds will roll in late this evening.

The threat for severe weather arrives with a low pressure system overnight.

Tonight’s sunset is at 6:20 p.m.

Slight risk for severe storms

There is a slight risk (level 2 of 5) of severe thunderstorms Tuesday night across Southeast Michigan. This is only the eighth time the Storm Predication Center has issued a slight risk for Southeast Michigan in February since 1986.

All hazards -- wind, hail, an isolated tornado -- are possible. We could see hail up to 2 inches in diameter, and wind gusts near 50 mph.

The widespread timeframe will be 8 p.m. Tuesday to 4 a.m. Wednesday, but I think this will more likely develop closer to midnight and last into the early morning hours on Wednesday.

Temps quickly drop Wednesday

We’ll see a quick return to winter on Wednesday with sharply falling temperatures. We’ll hit our high temperature before sunrise, and then cold air will surge in from the northwest with winds gusting upward of 40 mph.

Within 24 hours, we will see temperatures fall nearly 40 degrees and feel even colder with the wind chill. By Wednesday afternoon, temps could feel like the teens or even the single digits.

Colder temperatures will continue Thursday. We’ll wake up in the 20s and struggle to reach 40 degrees. However, this is exactly where temperatures should be for late February.

But this cold snap will be short-lived. Temperatures will return back above average this weekend as we rise to either side of 60 degrees.
