Could winter really be done with us?

The National Weather Service and NOAA released their monthly weather outlook for March last week. The predictions are based on probability vs. normal averages, and can help show possible trends in the longer range forecast.

Here’s what the outlook released on Feb. 29, 2024 says about Michigan. The outlook is valid for the entire month of March.

Michigan temperature outlook for March 2024

  • If you’re hoping for a warm March, the odds are in your favor: The NOAA outlook shows a 60-70% chance Michigan will see above average temperatures in the month of March, something we’re already seeing in the first week.
    • Same goes for the entire Great Lakes region and East Coast.
  • The average high temp in March for the Detroit area is 45. The average low is 28 degrees.

Michigan precipitation outlook for March 2024

  • The NOAA outlook shows a 33-50% chance to see below average precipitation for most of Michigan. Chances are near normal closer to the Michigan-Ohio border.
  • The average for precipitation in March for the Detroit region is 2.43 inches (rain).
