Storm chances and record temps: What to expect in Metro Detroit this week

Record highs Monday before rain moves in

4Warn Weather – Happy Monday! The day begins mild with temperatures in the 40s, closer to our average high this time of year. This sets us up for a warmup into record territory today.

Expect record-setting warmth this afternoon with high temperatures flirting with 70 degrees. The current record stands at 69 degrees set back in 1983.

Tonight’s sunset is at 6:28 p.m.

A cold front will bring showers late tonight into Tuesday, with isolated thunderstorms possible.

Showers, storms possible Tuesday

Grab the umbrella on Tuesday! Showers will be likely in the morning and will linger on-and-off throughout the day.

Showers will be widespread across Metro Detroit by around 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. Computer models show there will be some pockets of heavy downpours, and we won’t rule out a rumble of thunder here or there.

We’re not anticipating any severe storms, but we could still see some non severe thunderstorms move through the region in the morning.

Showers will become more scattered in the afternoon. By around 2 p.m., a line of showers to our west will begin to push eastward. Those in Washtenaw and Wayne counties will have more chances to see rain throughout the afternoon.

There is a chance for rain to redevelop after sunset for those in more southern Metro Detroit counties. Showers will move out for everyone by Tuesday night.

Tuesday highs will be in the low 60s, still about 20 degrees above average. After Tuesday, we’ll slide to around 50 degrees for highs the rest of the week.

Rain, snow chances later this week

The next chance for rain after Tuesday will arrive late Friday and linger into Saturday. In fact, we could see a few snowflakes mix in late Saturday before drying out on Sunday.

Elsewhere ...

Nationally, the snow and high winds out west are beginning to die down. The threat of wildfires persists in the High Plains. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible in portions of the Southern Plains into the Mississippi Valley on Monday, in addition to locally heavy rain in the central Gulf Coast.
