Whitmer takes action on tax relief in Michigan, promotes new book

Tax filing deadline is Monday, April 15

As the tax filing deadline approaches, Governor Gretchen Whitmer is making the rounds to communities across the State of Michigan.

Whitmer joined State Representative Nate Shannon in Utica on Monday (April 8) to discuss tax relief.

“The people in my district are hard-working, and they deserve to keep their hard-earned dollars,” Rep. Shannon said.

The lawmakers want to ensure that taxpayers are aware of credits for retirees and working families.

The retirement tax was repealed, and the Working Families Tax Credit was increased from six percent to 30% of the federal Earned Income Tax Credit.

“We got a billion dollars in tax relief for Michigan,” Gov. Whitmer said. “It’s for seniors and for working people. That’s why we want to remind people to check it out. When you are filling out your taxes, make sure you question whether or not you are eligible for these two opportunities.”

The opportunities are expected to give many Michiganders an economic boost. The retirement credit will be given to about 700,000 senior-lead households.

“When you think about it, 464,000 households are going to get $3,150 because of the working families tax credit,” Gov. Whitmer said.

As the governor makes stops across the state, behind the scenes, she is preparing for the release of a new book. Governor Whitmer recently penned a memoir called True Gretch.

“I didn’t do it in my official capacity,” Gov. Whitmer explained. “It is lessons I’ve learned over the years. I’ll be donating the proceeds to the Capitol Region Community Foundation.”

The book project was officially announced a few days ago.

“I hope that it puts a little light out there,” Gov. Whitmer said. “These are heavy times. There are a lot of heavy, dark things that we’ve all got to confront in life, especially right now. And I wanted to put some light out in the world.”

The governor said it’ her goal to try giving people who read the book a reason to laugh or some inspiration, since we’ve all been through some tough times.

Whitmer’s book True Gretch is expected to be released in Summer 2024. The tax filing deadline is Monday, April 15.
