Severe storms may bring flooding, tornadoes to Metro Detroit this week

Waves of rain arrive Wednesday

4Warn Weather – There’s one more day to get outside and enjoy the sunshine and above-average temperatures before waves of rain arrive on Wednesday.

Today will be mostly sunny with high temperatures in the mid to upper 60s. The day will remain dry.

Tonight’s sunset is at 8:17 p.m.

Clouds will gradually build in later this afternoon and evening ahead of rain that will arrive overnight.

Severe weather possible Wednesday

The first round of rain will arrive with an approaching warm front after midnight into early Wednesday morning. That first round should be finished before the peak of the morning rush hour commute.

There is a slight risk for severe weather (level 2 of 5) on Wednesday afternoon for areas south of I-69 and down to the Ohio state line. Damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph will be the main threat, but there will also be a chance for large hail up to one inch in diameter, and an isolated tornado.

The storms will move through rather quickly, pushing east at 40 mph mainly between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

There is a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) for excessive rainfall. Overall rainfall totals by the end of Wednesday could be anywhere from a half an inch to upward of an inch, so we also can’t rule out some isolated, minor flooding.

Highs will be around 70 degrees on Wednesday.

More rain chances

We’ll spend the rest of the workweek with highs in the 60s and another chance for rain early Friday. Thursday now looks to be dry.

We’ll dry out this weekend with cooler highs in the 50s. The cooldown is expected to be brief, though, as temperatures rise into the 60s next week.

Elsewhere ...

Nationally, a storm system will bring the threat of severe weather and isolated flash flooding to the Mississippi Valley on Tuesday, and across portions of Indiana, Ohio and parts of Lower Michigan on Wednesday. Heavy snowfall is expected over the next couple of days for the northern Rockies. Warm temperatures continue across the South and desert Southwest. Chillier weather is expected for the upper Great Lakes and northern Rockies heading into the weekend.
