Strong to severe storms coming to Metro Detroit ahead of scorching heat wave

Thunderstorms move into region Thursday

Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible on Thursday as a cold front moves into the region (WDIV)

4Warn Weather – We’ll have some sunshine on this Wednesday, and it’ll be warmer than yesterday.

A southwest flow of air will kick in throughout the day, warming us up into the mid-80s this afternoon. Skies will have a mix of sun and clouds.

The day will remain dry ahead of showers and potentially severe storms arriving Thursday.

Tonight’s sunset is at 9:10 p.m.

Severe weather Thursday

A cold front will move into our region Thursday, bringing some potentially severe weather with it.

Rain showers are possible Thursday morning around 8 a.m., potentially impacting your drive. These showers aren’t expected to be severe.

Sunshine will stick around for part of the day. Temperatures will soar into the upper 80s near 90 degrees by the afternoon.

We are expecting a chance of showers and thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening, some of those could be strong to possibly severe.

The storm prediction center has placed the western part of Metro Detroit and areas west of it under a slight risk (level 2 of 5) for severe weather. The rest of Metro Detroit will be under a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) for severe weather.

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible around 5 p.m. and later. The primary storm threats are damaging winds and large hail, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out -- especially in the areas under a slight risk.

As the cold front moves east overnight into Friday morning, we could see a few lingering showers early on Friday. Wet weather should move out by sunrise.

Friday looks to be mostly dry and sunny. Highs will be in the low 80s.

Sunshine will stick around for the weekend, too. Highs will be in the low 80s on Saturday, and warm into the upper 80s on Sunday.

Heat wave next week

We’re looking to get our first sustained heat wave next week.

Highs will climb into the upper 90s, close to 100 degrees, on Monday afternoon. Temps will be in the mid-90s on Tuesday.

When you factor in the humidity, heat index values could easily eclipse 100 degrees or better for the start of next week.

We’ll have a mix of sun and clouds on Monday and Tuesday. A few showers are possible Monday, and some isolated showers are possible Tuesday.
