Severe storms in Metro Detroit may have damaging winds, hail

Isolated tornado also possible Thursday

Strong to severe thunderstorms move into the region Thursday afternoon and into Thursday evening with a cold front (WDIV)

4Warn Weather – Expect more heat and humidity in your Thursday forecast with thunderstorm chances arriving today.

The day begins with some cloud cover and chances for a few scattered showers for some. Sunshine will stick around for part of the day. Temperatures will soar into the upper 80s near 90 degrees by the afternoon.

A cold front will move into the region this afternoon, bringing with it potentially severe weather. We’re expecting showers and thunderstorms, which may become strong-to-severe, this afternoon and evening.

The storm prediction center has placed the all of Metro Detroit and areas west of it under a slight risk (level 2 of 5) for severe weather.

Damaging winds and large hail will be the primary storm threats, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out -- especially in the areas under a slight risk. Winds will be gusting as high as 25-30 mph most of the day.

I do not think this is going to be a widespread severe weather event for the region. The latest data on Thursday morning suggests a line of thunderstorms will move into the region after 5 p.m.-6 p.m., and should move out of the region by midnight.

Tonight’s sunset is at 9:10 p.m.

Once the potentially severe storms move through, sunshine is on tap for the end of the week and the weekend.

Highs will be in the upper 70s and low 80s on Friday and Saturday, and will warm into the upper 80s near 90 degrees by Sunday.

Getting hotter next week

We’re looking to get our first sustained heat wave next week.

Highs will climb into the upper 90s, close to 100 degrees, on Monday afternoon. Temps will be in the mid-90s on Tuesday.

When you factor in the humidity, heat index values could easily eclipse 100 degrees or better for the start of next week.

We’ll have a mix of sun and clouds on Monday and Tuesday. A few showers are possible Monday, and some isolated showers are possible Tuesday.

Wednesday will have some sunshine, too. High temps will stay hot, reaching the mid-90s.
