4Warn Weather Alert declared for significant heat wave moving into Metro Detroit next week

Heat index values could reach 100+ degrees for multiple days

Heat index values will go into the upper 90s and lower 100s across the region early next week (WDIV)

4Warn Weather – After a really nice end to the week on Friday with plenty of sunshine and lower humidity values, we will keep the humidity into the forecast looking ahead into the upcoming weekend.

We will keep the sunshine into the forecast with some cloud cover both Saturday and Sunday. As of right now, we will keep the forecast dry into the entire weekend, high temperatures heading for the lower 80s on Saturday. Then much warmer for the end of the weekend on Sunday as we are heading into the upper 80s by Sunday afternoon. It will feel warmer and more humid for Father’s Day on Sunday as we could see heat index values into the lower 90s for Sunday afternoon.

Looking ahead to next week, we are looking at our first sustained heat wave heading our way for the majority of next week. High-pressure will anchor itself down over the southeastern United States. North of the high-pressure center, we are looking at well above average temperatures across portions of the Midwest through the Ohio Valley, Great Lakes, and into the Northeast, including Metro Detroit.

This would mean near record temperatures for multiple days next week. High temperature is expected to be in the mid to upper 90s Monday through Friday, with heat index values going up to or above 100° each day once you factor in the humidity. Heat Advisories and/or Excessive Heat Watches and Warnings may be needed for most of next week for the region. To put this heat wave into some perspective, the last time we had 4 or more consecutive days of high temperatures in Detroit at or above 90 degrees was July 1-4, 2002. Based on the current forecast, this would eclipse that, making this one of the longest heat waves we have seen in over 20 years.

We are going to bring the chance for a few showers most days next week with a few disturbances running around that high-pressure center over southeastern Michigan, but the day will not be a complete washout, and these would help to break the heat and humidity briefly.

Take all your heat precautions next week, wear lightweight, loose fitting clothing, stay out of the sun for extended periods of time, stay hydrated and take care of our friends and neighbors.
