Heat wave hits Metro Detroit this week: What to know

Warnings, advisories in place for SE Michigan

4Warn Weather – Heat and humidity will affect Southeast Michigan all week long.

An excessive heat watch that was draping all of SE Michigan has been upgraded to excessive heat warnings for Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties starting at noon on Monday, June 17, and lasting through Friday. The remaining outlying areas across Southeast Michigan will be under a heat advisory for the same time frame.

Our Monday morning begins with a few strong, but non severe storms.

There will be periodic chances for thunderstorms throughout the week. The heat and humidity could bubble up a few showers and storms in the heat of the afternoons, so keep an umbrella nearby.

Highs will reach the mid-90s on Monday. With the heat index, which factors in humidity, temps will feel closer to 100 degrees.

We are also under an air quality alert on Monday due to elevated ozone levels. Limit refueling during daylight hours or mowing the lawn. Anyone with or prone to respiratory issues should limit their time outdoors.

Tonight’s sunset is at 9:12 p.m.

Staying hot this week

An extremely warm and humid air mass will take hold throughout the entire work week.

High temperatures will be in the low 90s each day this week. Peak heat indices of 95 to 100 degrees are possible each afternoon. We expect little to no overnight relief, with lows staying above 70 degrees all week.

This will will be a long-duration of extreme heat that will affect people without proper cooling or hydration. Those working outdoors are urged to drink a cool glass of water every 20 minutes to stay hydrated, and to find shade whenever possible.
