Storms threaten part of weekend in Metro Detroit; heat returns for Independence Day

Saturday highs in lower 80s; Sunday highs in lower 70s

4Warn Weather – It feels like spring in Metro Detroit. Cooler air and scattered rain showers have moved over Southeast Michigan.

Light rain showers will move to the east this evening, but rain could become heavier overnight as isolated thunderstorms develop. Temperatures will slowly fall to around 70 degrees in Detroit, Downriver, and Monroe. The far northern suburbs, or north of M-59, will have lows in the mid-60s. Winds will be out of the southeast at 5 to 10 mph.

Many people will travel or have plans surrounding the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit this weekend.

Saturday

Saturday will be warmer and more humid, with chances of rain. The best chance of showers and thunderstorms will be in the morning, mainly before 11 a.m. This means that most of the rain activity is expected to be out of Metro Detroit before the 11 a.m. tee times at the Detroit Golf Club.

There is a marginal risk (level one of five) chance of isolated severe storms. The strongest storms will be capable of gusty winds, some hail, heavy rain, and localized street flooding. After a cloudy and wet Saturday morning, the afternoon will see decreasing clouds with the chance of a couple of pop-up showers or thunderstorms as a cold front approaches. However, most areas will be dry in the afternoon and evening. Highs will reach the lower to mid 80s. Winds will be out of the southwest at 10 to 15 mph.

It will be partly cloudy on Saturday night, with lows in the lower 60s. Expect winds to become westerly winds about 5 to 10 mph with gusts up to 60 mph.

Sunday

Behind the cold front, cooler air will flow into Southeast Michigan on Sunday. Temperatures will top out in the lower to mid-70s under partly cloudy skies. At night, it will be mostly clear and cool. Lows will be in the lower 50s in Metro Detroit and as cool as the upper 40s in the Thumb.

Monday

A dry, cool air mass will position itself over Southeast Michigan and Southwestern Ontario on Monday, making it mostly sunny and comfortable Canada Day. Highs will be in the mid-70s, and lows will be in the mid- to upper 50s.

Tuesday

Warmer air will flow back into Metro Detroit on Tuesday as a warm front sweeps across the region. It will be mostly cloudy. Highs will be around 80 degrees. A stray shower will be possible later in the day and night. Overnight temperatures will stay elevated with lows in the upper 60s.

Wednesday

More showers and thunderstorms will be possible on Wednesday amid hot and humid conditions. Afternoon temperatures will be near 90 degrees in Metro Detroit, and lows will be in the upper 60s.

Independence Day

Thursday, or the Fourth of July, will be warm, partly cloudy, and mostly dry. There is a slight chance of a few sprinkles. Highs will be in the mid-80s. Overall, the weather looks decent for outdoor activities.
