Strong storms expected across Michigan

4Warn Weather – All of Michigan is at risk for severe weather on Monday, but one part of the state is at a higher risk than the rest.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of Michigan into a risk category for severe storms, with Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula in the “marginal” zone, the lowest on a scale of five.

West Michigan and the western edge of Southeast Michigan are in the “slight” category, No. 2 on the scale, and the southwest corner of the state into Indiana are in the “enhanced” risk category, No. 3 on the scale, the highest in the state, and the only area at risk for an isolated tornado, according to the SPC map.

The timeline for storms is late Monday into early Tuesday morning, July 15 and July 16, 2024.

Severe weather forecast for Southeast Michigan

Here’s the latest from 4Warn Weather’s Ashlee Baracy: We have multiple chances for showers and thunderstorms. An area of thunderstorms will work across Southeast Michigan in the morning, bringing the first chance of scattered rain chances.

Highs Monday will rise close to 90. Most of the afternoon will be dry before the next complex of storms works east across southern Lake Michigan and across southern Michigan at night.

Storms Monday night have the potential to be strong to severe, with damaging winds.

Severe weather forecast for West Michigan

Severe weather is possible from 8 p.m. Monday to 4 a.m. Tuesday, with damaging winds as the main threat. Heavy rain and flooding is possible, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids.

Severe weather forecast for Northern Lower Michigan

From NWS in Gaylord: Heat, humidity, and storm chances will wane after today. Can’t rule out a stronger storm this evening / tonight, but the rest of the week looks drier, cooler, less humid, and sunnier outside of a few showers Wednesday.

Severe weather forecast for Michigan Upper Peninsula

From NWS in Marquette: After a quiet start to the day, another round of thunderstorms kicks off late this afternoon along and ahead of a cold front. A few storms could become strong to severe at times with damaging winds the main threat. Otherwise, expect another hot and humid day before cooler, drier weather returns Tuesday into midweek.
