Strong storms to bring threat of gusty winds, torrential rain Monday in Metro Detroit

Cooler, less humid weather for much of week

There is a marginal (or level of five) risk of severe thunderstorms mainly south of M-59 from about 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday, but the strong storms could develop outside of this timeframe and area. (WDIV)

A couple of isolated showers or thunderstorms are possible in Metro Detroit through Sunday night. Otherwise, it will be partly cloudy with lows in the upper 60s to 70 degrees. Winds will be westerly around 5 mph.

Monday

A few showers will be in the vicinity during the Monday morning commute with mostly cloudy skies. The morning chance will be higher north of M-59. During the afternoon the better chance of showers and thunderstorms will be south of M-59. Atmospheric moisture will fuel afternoon and evening storms. Overall conditions will be favorable for some storms to become strong as a cold front sweeps southward.

The strongest storms could be capable of damaging winds, large hail, and an isolated tornado. Some of the storms will produce downpours, which could cause localized flooding.

Monday’s highs will top out in the lower to mid to upper 80s, and it will be uncomfortably muggy. The heat index will be in the lower 90s. Lows will fall to the lower 60s.

In national weather, the Southeast will face dangerous weather conditions, including the threat of torrential rain, strong winds, and isolated tornadoes from Hurricane Debby. Debby strengthened into a hurricane Sunday night. Landfall is expected in the Big Bend area of Florida’s Gulf Coast early Monday.

Tuesday

Here in Southeast Michigan, the chance for showers and thunderstorms will linger into Tuesday. Highs will be noticeably cooler in the lower to mid 70s. Lows will be around 60 degrees.

Wednesday through Weekend

Skies are likely to be mostly sunny to partly cloudy from Wednesday through next weekend. During this stretch, highs will range from the mid 70s to lower 80s. Lows will be in the upper 50s and lower 60s.
