Breaking down the risk for severe storms on Friday in Metro Detroit

Wet weekend ahead

4WARN WEATHER – We’re waking up to soggy conditions on Friday morning.

Unsettled weather will continue today through the upcoming weekend, with periods of showers and a chance of thunderstorms. I think today is the worst of the next three. Isolated severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening.

Showers with some embedded thunderstorms work across the area this morning into early afternoon. Highs will be back around 80. There remains a Marginal (1 out of 5) risk for severe weather this afternoon through early tonight. Isolated thunderstorms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts to 60 mph.

In addition, storms may bring locally heavy rainfall. Some model data indicated the inclement weather arriving as early as the lunch hour, but the greatest potential for severe weather seems to fall between 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Expect these storms to move from the southwest to the northeast at 35 mph.

Sunrise is at 6:42 a.m. and sunset is at 8:32 p.m.

Low pressure pretty much stalls across Lower Michigan this weekend causing rounds of scattered showers and unsettled weather with temperatures in the 70s through Sunday. Drier conditions return early next week with cooler than average temperatures sticking around as highs stay in the mid-70s.
