Tracking strong to severe storm chances in Metro Detroit

Summer heat, humidity returns to Metro Detroit

Heat index values pushing 100 degrees is possible with thunderstorms on Tuesday. (WDIV)

4Warn Weather – After a dry start to the weekend, the forecast becomes a little more active, looking ahead through the end of the weekend and into the start of next week.

We’re watching the radar Sunday morning for a few showers possible, but most people will remain dry, but also tracking the potential for a few thunderstorms Sunday afternoon and evening. This is all thanks to a disturbance that will be working through the region, and if one of those thunderstorms does fire, they could have some gusty winds with it.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed portions of the region under a marginal risk (Level 1/5) for severe weather today. The coverage of these thunderstorms Sunday afternoon and evening will not be widespread, some people will stay dry and not see any thunderstorm coverage at all. Expect the humidity to increase throughout the day as well. High temperatures heading for the upper 80s Sunday afternoon.

Next week

Then, we look ahead into early next week or the summer heat and humidity will return in full force. Our ridge of high-pressure will move off to the east allowing warm moisture to move into the region. This will send high temperatures Monday and Tuesday into the upper 80s and lower 90s across the region. But once you factor in the humidity, heat index values will go well into the 90s to near 100°.

Heat advisories may be needed for portions of the region both Monday and or Tuesday ‚so make sure to take your precautions over the next couple of days as it has been a while since we’ve seen this kind of heat across the region.

We will watch a cold front move through the region Tuesday night into early on Wednesday, and this will trigger a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some storms could be strong to possibly severe. As of right now, damaging winds, and hail look to be the primary threats Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday evening.

Once that frontal boundary moves through the region, we will get a break from the summer heat and humidity, but also keep the chances of rain into the forecast for Thursday and into the end of the week on Friday with some thunderstorms possible by Friday. High temperatures dropping into the middle 80s both Thursday and Friday.
