August ending with blast of heat, humidity, storm chances in Metro Detroit

Heat indices around 100 degrees on Tuesday in Southeast Michigan

Highs will be around 90 degrees with the heat index a few degrees higher. (WDIV)

We are starting the new week with hot weather.

Most of Southeast Michigan was in the upper 80s to 90 degrees on Sunday afternoon with a couple of showers in the area.

Sunday night will be partly cloudy, but clouds will increase toward morning. Overnight lows will be in the mid 60s in the Thumb to near 70 degrees for the rest of Southeast Michigan. Winds will be out of the east and southeast around 5 mph.

Monday

Monday morning, it will be mostly cloudy with the chance of a few sprinkles from Flint to Port Huron and northward. Plan on partly cloudy skies and heat during the afternoon. Highs will be around 90 degrees with the heat index a few degrees higher. Winds will be out of the southwest at 5 to 10 mph with gusts near 15 mph.

If you open the windows at night, you will notice little relief. Temperatures will still be warm and the air will be humid. Lows will only be in the lower 70s on Monday night.

Tuesday

Increased humidity will make it feel like the mid 90s to 100 degrees on Tuesday afternoon. (WDIV)

Tuesday is likely to be the hottest day of the week. Air temperatures will reach the lower 90s, but increased humidity will make it feel like the mid 90s to 100 degrees. While the mostly sunny, hot weather may end up as the main concern for the day, there is a slight chance of storms in the forecast. The ingredients will be in place for a line of strong to severe storms to develop to the west of Michigan. That line could travel north of Southeast Michigan on Tuesday night or veer toward Southeast Michigan. The chances of it heading into Southeast Michigan appear to be lower, but the threat exists. The line of storms would be capable of heavy rain and straight-line winds.

Tuesday night, besides the chance of a few showers or thunderstorms, skies will be partly cloudy. Lows will be in the lower 70s.

Wednesday

Wednesday will not be as hot, but temperatures will be in the upper 80s. The air will also be sticky. Be prepared for the chance of a few spotty showers or thunderstorms. Lows will be in the mid 60s.

Thursday and Friday

There is a slight chance of rain on Thursday and a better chance for showers on Friday. The daytime highs will be in the lower to mid 80s. Expect lows in the lower to mid 60s.

Next weekend

Plan for partly cloudy and dry conditions for next weekend. Highs will be in the lower 80s, which is near normal.
