Heat, humidity, severe storm threat combine for potentially dangerous weather in Metro Detroit

4Warn Weather – It’s hot!

Monday’s temperatures soared into the 90s with heat indices in the mid 90s in Metro Detroit. It will get even hotter on Tuesday, and it is prompting alerts.

Heat Advisory

A heat advisory has been issued for all of Metro Detroit and much of Southeast Michigan, including Genesee, Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Wayne, Lenawee, and Monroe counties for Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

A 4Warn Weather Alert has also been declared for Tuesday due to the heat and the chance of strong to severe storms.

Monday Night

Monday night, it will be partly cloudy and warm. Lows will be in the lower 70s. Winds will be out of the south and south-southwest around 5 mph.

Tuesday

Be prepared for the heat and the chance of storms Tuesday. Temperatures will rise into the lower 90s, but it will feel like 100 degrees or higher in many communities. It will be imperative to take precaution for the heat and check on the wellness of others.

It will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy for much of Tuesday, but the sunshine could be interrupted by an isolated morning thunderstorm and a few afternoon storms. A few thunderstorms could become strong to severe beginning in the afternoon, but the better chance will be closer to sunset through midnight. All of Southeast Michigan is under a slight (or level two of five) risk. The primary concerns are straight-line winds in excess of 60 mph, small hail, localized flooding, and a low threat of an isolated tornado. Non-thunderstorm winds will be out of the southwest at 5 to 10 mph.

After the chance of storms Tuesday night, skies will be partly cloudy. Temperatures will only fall to the lower 70s.

Wednesday

The abnormally hot weather and chance of storms will continue into Wednesday. Expect highs around 90 degrees in Metro Detroit with the heat index in the mid 90s. There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms from lunchtime until night. Storms could again become severe with the threat of damaging winds. Wednesday night’s lows will be in the mid to upper 60s.

Thursday

Thursday will offer slight relief. Under partly cloudy skies and a chance of showers and thunderstorms, highs will be in the lower 80s. Lows will be in the lower to mid 60s.

Friday

Then, a cold front will sweep across Southeast Michigan on Friday. It will bring more showers and thunderstorms. Highs will be in the mid 80s.

Weekend

Behind the cold front, cooler and drier air will flow into Metro Detroit for the weekend. Plan on mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies with highs in the lower 80s on Saturday and Sunday. That is closer to the normal high of 79 degrees during the final days of August and the start of September.
