Heat, chance of strong storms return Friday in Metro Detroit

Friday highs in lower 90s, Saturday highs in lower 80s

4Warn Weather – Thursday has brought a break from the showers and thunderstorms, but Metro Detroit has a chance of more on Friday.

Thursday evening and night will be partly cloudy and humid. Lows will range from 60 degrees in the Thumb to 65 degrees in Metro Detroit. Easterly winds will be around 5 mph.

Friday

Some people will still be without power on Friday after Tuesday’s storms, with increased heat and more storms coming.

Friday will be partly to mostly cloudy until showers and thunderstorms arrive ahead of a cold front. There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms midday or around lunchtime, especially north of Flint.

The storms that develop during the late afternoon and evening in Southeast Michigan can become strong to severe. The main threats will be damaging winds, hail, and an isolated tornado. The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of Southeast Michigan under the slight (or level two of five) risk category. A marginal (level one) risk covers much of the rest of Lower Michigan, including Lenawee and Monroe counties; but it is subject to change.

Friday’s temperatures will push into the mid-80s in the Thumb and the upper 80s to near 90 degrees in Metro Detroit. Coupled with the high humidity, those temperatures will send the heat index into the mid-90s in the hottest locations.

The strongest storms should exit the region by 10 p.m. Friday, but showers will linger into the overnight hours. Lows will fall to the mid to upper 60s.

Saturday

Behind the cold front, drier and cooler air will flow into Metro Detroit this weekend.

Saturday will start off with mostly cloudy skies, but clouds will decrease late. Highs will be in the lower 80s. By night, skies will be mostly clear as temperatures fall to around 60 degrees.

Sunday

Sunday will be partly cloudy, with a chance of a stray shower. The better chance of a shower will be in the Thumb. Highs will be around 80 degrees. Under mostly clear skies, expect a noticeably cooler night. Lows will be in the lower to mid-50s.

Labor Day

The cooldown will continue into Labor Day. Monday will be mostly sunny, but highs will only be in the lower to mid-70s. The average high this Labor Day weekend is 79 degrees.

With mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies, temperatures will return to around 80 degrees by midweek.
