Clear skies affording chance to see northern lights in Metro Detroit

Seasonable weather forecast for Southeast Michigan next week

A couple of showers will be possible Sunday morning, especially north of I-69. Otherwise, it will be a mostly sunny and warm afternoon.

The pleasant weather will continue this weekend.

Saturday night will be mostly clear, which will give some communities of Southeast Michigan the chance to see the northern lights. Lows will be near 60 degrees in Detroit, upper 50s in Brighton, Ann Arbor, Flint, and Sterling Heights. Lows will fall down into the mid 50s in the Thumb. Winds will be out of the southeast at 5 to 10 mph with gusts up to 20 mph.

The best chance for viewing the aurora borealis, also known as the northern Lights, will be between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. (WDIV)

The best chance for viewing the aurora borealis, also known as the northern Lights, will be between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., while looking toward the north and positioned away from city lights. The geomagnetic storm is forecast to be strong enough for the northern lights to be visible as far south as Ohio.

Marine Alerts

In Southeast Michigan, a gale warning is in effect for the waters of Lake Huron from Port Sanilac and northward until 10 a.m. Sunday. A small craft advisory will be in effect during the same period from Port Sanilac to Port Huron.

Small craft advisories are also in effect for the Michigan waters of lakes St. Clair and Erie until 10 a.m. Sunday.

Sunday

Clouds will develop for part of the morning on Sunday as a cold front sweeps across Southeast Michigan. A couple of showers will be possible, but the chance is mainly for areas north of I-69. Otherwise, it will be a mostly sunny and warm afternoon. Most communities will see highs in the mid 70s. Westerly winds will be 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

Clouds will build again Sunday night as temperatures fall into the mid to upper 40s.

Workweek

It will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy all week. Monday through Thursday, highs will be in the 60s and lows in the 40s. By Friday, temperatures will bump up into the 70s.

The normal highs for next week are in the mid 60s.
