Dry, breezy weather in Metro Detroit, Milton strengthening in Gulf

Cooldown returns temps to near normal in Southeast Michigan

Following an unseasonably warm Sunday, temperatures across Metro Detroit will dive.

On Sunday afternoon, temperatures in Southeast Michigan jumped to 80 degrees in a few locations. The warmth, breezy conditions, and dry air elevated the fire danger and prompted red flag warnings for Livingston and Genesee counties for the day.

The windy conditions also elevated marine hazards.

Sunday night will be partly cloudy, breezy, and cool. As a cooler air mass slides over Southeast Michigan, the temperatures will tumble into the upper 40s near Detroit and around 40 degrees in the Thumb. Winds will be out of the northwest at 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

Small craft advisories will be in effect for lakes Erie and St. Clair in Southeast Michigan until 10 p.m. Sunday.

On Lake Huron, the advisory will be in effect until 10 p.m. Sunday from Port Sanilac to Port Huron and until 10 a.m. Monday from Saginaw Bay to Port Sanilac.

Monday will be dry, breezy and mostly sunny, but lower temperatures will help to lower the fire danger. A jacket and hat will come in handy in the morning. Sunglasses will also be useful. Temperatures will be much cooler with highs in the mid 60s, which is normal. Northwesterly winds will be 5 to 10 mph with gusts up to 20 mph.

Through Weekend

It will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy for the rest of the workweek. Highs will be in the mid 60s through Thursday, and lows will be in the lower to mid 40s. A few communities, such as traditionally cooler locations in the Thumb, could see overnight temperatures in the 30s. A warm front will warm Friday’s temperatures back into the 70s. That warmer air will stick around for Saturday. On Sunday, a cold front will knock down temperatures and bring the chance of rain showers.

Hurricane Milton

In national weather, Florida is bracing for another direct hit from a hurricane. Hurricane Milton was positioned in the western Gulf of Mexico on Sunday night as a Category One storm. While it was still nearly 800 miles from Tampa, the storm was on track to make landfall on the west coast of Florida on Wednesday. That is less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene devastated the state and other parts of the Southeast. Milton is forecast to strengthen and hit as a major hurricane.

Hurricane Milton is forecast to strengthen into a major hurricane before landfall.
